{"id":1682,"date":"2019-02-04T22:29:43","date_gmt":"2019-02-04T22:29:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/projecttransformation.org\/central-texas\/?p=1682"},"modified":"2019-02-12T23:28:29","modified_gmt":"2019-02-12T23:28:29","slug":"book-drive-why-and-how-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projecttransformation.org\/greater-tarrant\/news\/book-drive-why-and-how-to","title":{"rendered":"Book Drive: Why and How to"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">In 2012, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwf.org\/~\/media\/PDFs\/Eco-schools\/McGraw%20Hill\/12-4-12%20A%20Research%20Study%20on%20Textbook%20Recycling.ashx\">Research Study on Textbook Recycling<\/a>, there was an estimated <strong>640,000 tons<\/strong> worth of books in U.S. landfills, approximating <strong>320 million books<\/strong>. The books in these landfills are anywhere from destroyed to brand new. In our opinion, no matter their condition, the last place a book should be is in the trash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Here\u2019s the bad news: We can\u2019t save every book from its untimely demise. But, the good news: We can save YOURS!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Our kiddos are always needing more books, and a book drive is a great way to collect both new and well-loved books. We love getting to watch the community come together and collect books from our kiddos, and they are so greatly impacted by it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Here&#8217;s a guide to help you have a successful book drive:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>1. Ask yourself these 3 questions:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Who are you asking?<\/span>:&nbsp;This could be a small group (youth group, bible study, teachers in your school), or a large group (whole church, social club\/organization, entire school district).<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">How are you asking?<\/span>:&nbsp;Are you collecting books physically or electronically? If physically, you can place a box in the church or school lobby, or ask that books are dropped at your house or desk. Electronically could look like an Amazon wishlist, or an email sign up. What will work best for your audience? A single big event, or an extended opportunity?<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">What are you asking for?<\/span>:&nbsp;Coordinate with PT as to what they\u2019re needing for the summer. This could be curriculum books, early reader books, chapter books\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Plan your communication strategy &amp; calendar&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A few things to remember:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Because PT kicks off summer training in May, we would love to have any books before then! (We need to code and organize them to get ready for the kiddos.)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Coordinate your calendar depending on the event type being planned (single big event or extended opportunity to donate).<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Discern both main communication and secondary communication:\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Main<\/span>: Your initial and primary choice of communicating (in person or via email); main communication is more directed toward individuals<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Secondary<\/span>: Friendly reminders placed strategically for audience; this could be posters\/fliers\/ads in the bulletin, social media posts, a PT shirt Sunday, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Collect your books<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Tips on keeping books organized:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Count them as you get them &#8211; piles of books can grow fast and uncontrollably. Help yourself out early on and count as you go! (We&#8217;ll need record of how many books you bring, so we would also appreciate this step!)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Separate them out in a basic way (picture book vs. chapter book, many words vs. few words).<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Help us filter books! Make sure books are appropriate for our kids content-wise, and are in good shape to be handled by elementary kiddos. We\u2019ll love you for it. \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5. Bring them our way&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Coordinate with PT to find out when we\u2019ll be in the office to receive the books.
