Today, we are honoring the late Dr. Leighton K. Farrell, on what would have been his 90th birthday! In cooperation with co-creator Sarah Wilke, the vision for Project Transformation began as a blueprint sketched out on a napkin over lunch.
They dared to imagine a program that would offer college students hands-on leadership training as interns and the opportunity to explore ministry as a career choice. They boldly dreamed of a ministry that would support and connect local churches by providing academic and spiritual programming for children in low-income neighborhoods.
Leighton Farrell invested himself in building PT by serving as one of its original board members, connecting this ministry to the resources of the United Methodist Church. He was committed to the development of local churches in transitional neighborhoods, to mentoring young adults considering ministry as a career, and to making a difference in the lives of children.
Towards the end of his life he offered this pastoral prayer, “We have come this far by faith and we will continue to walk with our hand in yours wherever you lead us.” This is the vision, the reality that is Project Transformation today.
